Do you remember what windows used to look like, during the Middle Ages? They were really thick blobs of glass that let the light in, but not much detail.
That's religion. The important part of this analogy is not that the glass is really crappy, but that the light gets in at all. People who get off on criticizing the glass are missing the point. The light is the point.
Faulting Christianity for all the people who have used it to abuse others ignores all those for whom it has added depth, richness and goodness to their lives. That's not terribly reasonable. Someone truly seeking the truth would instead focus on the fact that light gets in at all, rather than on the imperfections in the glass.
