Real power isn't power-over, but power-within. Essentially, it's love. But wherever power congregates, the power-over people zoom in like flies on sugar. They want to take over, and, eventually, they often do.

This phenomenon isn't limited to religion. You can see it in any theater of human activity. Politics is another goodie. And when the baddies get in charge, they start changing things to benefit them. And what once was good is corrupted.

That's why I don't take what any organized religion says about its deities at face value. You can see evils committed in the name of several religions; you can also see good, even heroic good.

I am not an atheist. I've experienced divine love in more than one religious context, so I don't believe in divine exclusivity -- and I don't believe the Christian God does, either. As for Jesus' sacrifice ... I don't understand it, but I don't understand a lot of things. I accept it, though; and much of the reason lies with Ramakrishna, a 19th-century Hindu saint who worshipped idols and, more specifically, Kali. He had his own encounter with Jesus and came away calling him the Redeemer of the world. He didn't convert to Christianity, though.

I suspect a great deal of your hostility comes from believing things people have said about Jesus and God, and not from personal experience. I hope you'll get the chance to encounter them, yourself, outside a religious context.
