I can't speak for Sanders; but I do think I understand Knowles, Walsh and Shapiro, and their take is that (a) we are not women, and (b) treating us as though we are damages both ourselves and society at large. They see themselves as standing up for truth.

We could reduce the temperature several levels if both sides would recognize that what each of them holds is a belief: a position that is meaningful to us but which we cannot prove. That would take this conflict into the realm where it belongs, and defuse the conflict considerably.
